Speaker Biography
Tadashi Shiozawa, Ph.D., is a Professor of Applied Linguistics at Chubu University with over 20 years of experience leading and managing study abroad programs. His research focuses on Global English, study abroad, and their pedagogical applications. He has published in journals such as Language Teaching Research, Journal of Asian English Studies, and JALT Journal. He has authored and edited many books and textbooks, including The Impact of Study Abroad on Life: Testimonials from 2,000 Participants over 50 Years and Global Activator. Keynote Information Title: Beyond Mobility: Some Strategic Insights for Cultivating Meaningful Study Abroad Experiences for Students, Institutions and Global Partnerships "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." This well-known quote resonates deeply with advocates of international education. Even a brief study abroad experience can significantly transform how individuals think, act, and feel—expanding their horizons and reshaping their lives. As Natsume Sōseki, the celebrated Meiji-era author who struggled to survive in London, once said, "Only by stepping outside can one come to know what lies within." In this context, studying abroad is not merely an opportunity for language acquisition or cultural exploration—it is an essential experience for university students aiming to become leaders in the 21st century. Yet, despite its value, many Japanese students remain hesitant to pursue such opportunities. Economic uncertainty, risk aversion, and limited institutional support continue to be major barriers. At the administrative level, study abroad programs are often treated as symbolic gestures for global branding rather than strategic educational investments. While “internationalization” is a widely cited goal, a clear gap remains between rhetoric and action. Drawing on my experience as both a language teacher and an administrator, this presentation will examine the current state of international education in Japan, strategies for creating impactful and sustainable programs, and ways to overcome institutional and financial challenges. Topics will include securing government funding, preparing students for study abroad, maintaining engagement after return, and the vital role of research in advancing this field. |
